Ambassador Baba Ahmed Jidda, the secretary to the Borno state government, explained why the majority of their residents voted against the Peoples Democratic Party.
SSG Jidda Explains Why PDP Lost In Borno State
Baba Ahmed Jidda
Jidda lamented that the Borno people nearly became extinct because of the Boko Haram insurgency, while the Goodluck Jonathan-led government cared only about the election campaign.
The ambassador claimed that it was the reason why locals turned their backs on the PDP, Daily Trust reports.
Speaking with journalists at the INEC office in Maiduguri, he also expressed hope that Muhammadu Buhari, the president-elect, would tackle the terrorism in the region:
“The PDP came too late to salvage the situation in Borno State. We had been waiting for over five years for the PDP leadership to take drastic action on the insurgency but because there was no political commitment, nothing was done.
“The fact is we have no doubt about it, that being a retired general and former governor of the northeast who stayed in Maiduguri; and being a former GOC who did a lot against rebel forces from Chad, we are confident that Buhari will do something urgently to salvage Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states from the condition they found themselves in for the last five years.”
After having been announced the winner of the presidential election, Buhari said that the Nigerian army had enough capacity to deal with Boko Haram. The APC politician lamented, however, that the security system had been inhibited by corruption.
