Kano governor cuts pay for political office holders

The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has ordered the reduction of salaries and allowances of political office holders by half, in view of the prevailing economic realities the state.
Those affected are the governor, Deputy Governor, Hafiz Abubakar, all the 13 Commissioners, Special Advisers and others.

Kano is the second state after Kaduna to reduce salaries of public officials in the last three weeks.
The governor of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai, had earlier announced similar measures. Mr. El-Rufai also slashed the number of ministries from 19 to 13.
On Friday, he announced that the government will no longer provide free food and drinks during Ramadan fast as had been the practice in the past.
Speaking while inaugurating the new commissioners, Mr. Ganduje lamented that the state and the nation are facing cash crunch and need to reduce the remuneration of appointees and elected officials.
He said the action was part of the sacrifice he and others will pay for the survival of the government.
The governor assured that when things get better government officials will be rewarded for their sacrifices.
